What is Van-a-Gogh-go?

Explore the BEST of Austin and the Hill Country’s Art Scene!  This year we are happy to announce we have expanded the curriculum and are offering 3 different Van-a-gogh-go Camps, including “the Original” Van-a-gogh-go from 2016, “the ATX” and “the Violet Crown.” 

The Original

Traveling Art Camp AustinWe’ll visit The Blanton, take a metal-smithing class at Creative Side Jewelry Academy, see interesting public art works, watch a glass-blowing demonstration and so much more.  We’ll stretch our imaginations while viewing interesting public artworks, art galleries and creating our own art.

We’ll head out into the world for the early part of the day and be back to The Art Garage to create in the studio during the afternoons.  Campers can expect to create their own hand-forged metal rings or bracelets, glass slumped dish, mosaic artwork, large scale public mural and more. This camp will also include art history, art techniques, and the opportunity to reflect on our own work and the artwork of others.

“the Original” Van-A-Gogh-go! Session 1: June 12 – 16 

“the Original” Van-A-Gogh-go! Session 2: June 26 – 30

Cost: $465, includes all entrances fees, classes, materials, travel, t-shirt 

Arrive at: The Art Garage each day at 9 am, sharp.

Pick up: at 5 pm.  Additional care is available until 6pm for $6/hour

Ages: 11-16, This camp is open to all rising 6th to 10th graders who enjoy making and experiencing art.  Space is limited to just 12 campers per week.  Ratio: at least 6:1

Lunch is not provided. Most days a sack lunch will be needed. Please, see below for a “SAMPLE” daily itinerary.

The ATX:

We’ll visit The Contemporary, take a book-binding class at Austin Book Arts Center, see interesting public art works, kayak on Lady Bird Lake and so much more.  We’ll stretch our imaginations while viewing interesting public artworks, art galleries and creating our own art.

We’ll head out into the world for the early part of the day and be back to The Art Garage to create in the studio during the afternoons.  Campers can expect to create their own art books, glass sun catchers, mosaic artwork, large canvas painting and more. This camp will also include art history, art techniques, and the opportunity to reflect on our own work and the artwork of others.

“the ATX” Van-A-Gogh-go! Session 1: June 19 – 23 FULL!

“the ATX” Van-A-Gogh-go! Session 2: July 17 – 21

Cost: $445, includes all entrances fees, classes, materials, travel, t-shirt

The Violet Crown

We’ll visit Laguna Gloria, take a wheel-throwing class at Eye of the Dog, see interesting public art works, canoe on Lady Bird Lake and so much more.  We’ll stretch our imaginations while viewing interesting public artworks, art galleries and creating our own art.IMG_7781-1

We’ll head out into the world for the early part of the day and be back to The Art Garage to create in the studio during the afternoons.  Campers can expect to create their own ceramics, glass jewelry, mosaic artwork, tie-dye t-shirts and more. This camp will also include art history, art techniques, and the opportunity to reflect on our own work and the artwork of others.

SAMPLE Itinerary:

Day 1:

Did you know Austin is Home to over 250 public art works?  We will start exploring the artwork in the Art In Public Places collection around downtown, with a quick introduction and a walking tour of the art around 2nd street.  Then we’ll head over to the historic Deep Eddy Pool to see the mosaic wall and go for a swim.  Bring money or a sack lunch and your swimsuits if you’d like to swim.

Inspired by our day out we’ll come back to the studio and begin our own mosaic artwork.

Day 2:

We’ll take a Young Metal Smithing Workshop at Creative Side Jewelry Academy.  This is an awesome class where teens have the opportunity to learn Creative Side Van-A-Gogh-Gofundamental metal-smithing techniques to design and fabricate rings. Learn to apply beautiful texture with hammers and decorative metal stamps, adding your own personal touch and unique flare. Learn basic silver soldering skills using the traditional jeweler’s torch.  Copper and brass are provided.  If your teen would like to work in silver please, send $21.65.  Bring a sack lunch.

Back at The Art Garage we will finish our mosaic and begin to design our Hope Gallery mural project.

Day 3:

We’ll head south today to watch a glassblowing demonstration and tour the gallery at Wimberley GlassWorks.  This is some of the most beautiful glass blown in the country!  Time permitting, we’ll visit downtown Wimberley and a few of the shops/galleries there.  We’ll stop off on the way home at Blue Hole Regional Park in Wimberley for our lunch and a swim.  Bring a sack lunch, and swimsuits!

Back at The Art Garage, we’ll get busy creating our own glass fusion artwork inspired by what we saw.

 

 

Day 4: 

Today we will visit UT campus and The Blanton Museum of Art.  We’ll be lead by a docent on a tour of the museum to highlight 4 – 6 works of art.  We’ll spend a little more time on campus and head out for lunch.  Bring money for lunch or a sack lunch.

Back at The Art Garage, we’ll begin our own canvas paintings.

Day 5:

Have you been to Austin’s graffiti park, The Hope Gallery?  It is a super-cool open space where artists can paint their own murals.  We will collaborate and plan this artwork in groups thought the week.  Now it is time to have fun painting!

We’ll stop of on South Congress to see some iconic Austin murals and have lunch.  Please, bring a sack lunch or money for lunch.
